Biography

Isiah Thomas might not be a basketball player, but just like the hard-court superstar with the same name, he has taken the Detroit sports scene by storm.

Thomas (3-0, 3 KO’s) had a stellar amateur career which included two Junior Olympic championships and a gold medal at the 2005 World Championships. During his run through the amateurs, he even caught the attention of Hall of Fame trainer, and Detroit legend, Emmanuel Steward, who helped train Thomas before he turned pro.

“I have a kid who will be the next big thing, Isiah Thomas," said Steward. "I don't have to teach him much. He’s a gifted athlete.”

Since turning pro last September at light heavyweight, Thomas has won all three of his fights. Even more spectacularly, each win has come via a first round knockout.

In his most recent bout, on March 28, Thomas traveled to Oklahoma to fight on the same card as notable names such as Ronald Hearns and Chazz Witherspoon. However, it was Isiah who stole the show, using boxing skills beyond his years and his trademark power stopping Sam Norwood in the opening frame.

The second outing of Isiah’s professional career, on October 10, 2008 served as a homecoming for Thomas, it being the only fight of his professional career to take place in his home state, Michigan. The hometown crowd only served to help Thomas rise to the occasion, as he put Shawn Dean down for the count of ten a mere 36 seconds into the fight.

On September 20, 2008, Thomas stepped into the ring for the first time as a pro. It may have been his pro debut, but he sure didn’t look green. With the boxing prowess of a seasoned professional, Thomas knocked Tyrone Dicks out cold in round one, leaving Dicks on the canvas for upwards of ten minutes.

In June, 2009, Thomas signed with DiBella Entertainment and is looking forward to begin the advancement of his career with the DBE team by his side.

“I’m a boxer-puncher. I’m an entertainer. I have the skills the older fighters had,” said Thomas. “With my skill and their promotional ability, I can be a world champion.”

Promoter Lou DiBella was excited by the signing of Thomas, saying he believed in Thomas he had found a young prospect ready for a breakout.

“I think he’s a terrific prospect,” said DiBella. “He has a blend of speed and power that is extremely rare in boxing. That ability, coupled with his amateur experience, makes us believe he is one of the real sleepers in the professional ranks.”
