Biography

Christian made his debut at 15. The WBC super flyweight world champion – who is naturally righthanded but fights in the lefthanded stance - he won the undisputed WBC title in January, 2007, and has made six successful title defenses.

Mijares has given sensational performances and gotten rave reviews.

In his first defense of the super flyweight title in April, 2007, Cristian won a decisive 12-round unanimous decision against Mexican superstar Jorge Arce.

After the fight, Dan Rafael wrote on ESPN.com, “Arce, with his relentless, slugging style and charismatic personality, had emerged as one of the biggest stars in boxing among smaller-weight fighters in recent years. Arce, the mandatory challenger, was the favorite to win the title from his little-known Mexican countryman Mijares and move on.

“However, Mijares, the pick of many insiders because of his boxing skills, speed and southpaw style, upset the apple cart in grand fashion. He completely took Arce apart in the performance of his life. Arce was befuddled from the opening bell and it was obvious this was going to be Mijares’ night. The judges gave Arce a few rounds, but it could easily have been a shutout. Arce’s face said it all - he was a bloody mess by the end of the fight thanks to the dozens of clean shots he ate. After his performance, Mijares was a force to be reckoned with at 115 pounds.

Fightwriter.com’s Graham Houston reported, “This much anticipated fight turned out to be a mismatch. I knew that Mijares was going to be highly competitive but I never thought he would make Arce look like a novice.”

“It seemed that Mijares took command in the first round in such a dominant, bold way that he blew away Arce’s confidence.”

“Although Arce was game and, as always, defiant, he was outclassed so comprehensively that as early as round two it was clear that he would need a miracle to win.”

“Mijares was not only outboxing him, he was hurting him and making him hesitant. On the outside Arce was totally outboxed, which was not entirely unexpected. What did surprise me was the way that Mijares outfought the supposedly bigger puncher on the inside. It was Mijares who looked the stronger man, and he was also landing the much cleaner, harder punches.”

“It was a classic boxing display by Mijares, a performance of the highest quality. Mijares...was superb and I was enormously impressed,” said Houston.

After Cristian won the title in January, 2007, Doug Fischer of Maxboxing.com reported from ringside, “Cristian Mijares...was simply brilliant...weathering a mid-rounds storm from the Japanese warrior and eventually grinding down the 32-year-old veteran.... Mijares is like a 115-pound southpaw version of Floyd Mayweather Jr. – not the safety first pot-shot specialist we currently see at 147 pounds; I’m comparing the fresh-faced lad to the surgically effective and defensively astute boxer-puncher version of the Pretty Boy we saw at 130 pounds. Yeah, Mijares is THAT talented and skilled.”

Cristian said through an interpreter, “My full name is Cristian Lucio-Mijares, but I use my mother’s name, Mijares, to fight. I usually train at El Septimo Round Gym, The Seventh Round. It’s where I first started boxing with my uncles.”

Nacho Huizar said, “I’ve been working with Cristian for about three years. His uncle, Vicente, fought as Vicente Saldivar. He was a great fighter from Mexico, he fought for the world title against Esteban De Jesus. He had a great career in Los Angeles, California. He beat Andy Ganigan, he beat Randy Shields, all the best super featherweights in his time. His uncle, Ricardo, fought as Ricardo Mijares. He was a great prospect, but they stopped him in the middle of his career. Vicente and Ricardo are the brothers of Cristian’s mother.”

AMATEUR, PERSONAL BACKGROUND
Cristian said, “I was born and raised in Gomez Palacio, Durango, Mexico. I have one sister and one brother. My father is a bus driver, like The Green Line. My mother is a housewife.

“When I was young, I always went to the gym with my uncles. The gym was two doors from my house. It was a tradition in my family that everybody trained in the gym. I started boxing when I was 11 years old. After a few months, I saw I had the skills to do something with it, so I continued to go.

“I had 50 amateur fights. I had a record of 45-5 and won the nationals.

“I’m naturally righthanded. I do everything righthanded but fight. I started fighting as a southpaw when I first started boxing. They tried to change me to a righthander, but I couldn’t do anything from the righthanded stance. I felt better as a southpaw and kept fighting that way.

“I’m single, but I have a son, Tomas. He’s two years old.”...

STRENGTHS
A lefthander with good skills and movement...a sharp, accurate puncher...has a good defense...is experienced against very good opposition...
